Your First BJJ Class

Well done to you! You decided to come down for your first session of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and we could not be any more excited for you.

What to expect from your first class and how to get ready? Keep reading below for a few quick tips that will help to manage your nerves and expectations.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a full-contact sport, so do expect to be in contact with your training partner during the class, as it will be essential to learn the techniques, but do not worry, here at JSBJJ, we tailor our BEGINNER classes exactly for those that have never done martial arts before; in a super friendly environment.

BEFORE YOUR CLASS

The day is finally approaching and you are getting excited about your class, and so are we :) A few things to do before your class:

  • if possible take a shower before attending the class, especially if your work is labour intensive, use deodorant and brush your teeth, hygiene is of priority in contact sport to ensure everyone’s health and safety.

  • check your class starting time and aim to arrive 10-15 mins before, to allow enough time to get change.

  • all you need are normal comfy gym clothes, a t-shirt and shorts or leggings are fine, we will provide the rest of the equipment needed for your first session

  • pack your flip-flip in your bag, you will need them to walk around in the gym and access changing rooms and toilet, you will work barefoot on the tatami, ensure your feet are clean.

  • bring water to stay hydrated.

  • use the lockers provided to secure your personal items.

DURING YOUR CLASS

Your first class will be memorable and most likely confusing, but surely you will end up having lots of fun! The most important thing is to listen to your coach and your body's limits, again the program is designed for first-timers but it should be challenging, so do not be nervous about it if you find it difficult and confusing.

The class is structured with a warm-up with basic exercises, followed by techniques that the professor will show and you will have to repeat with your training partners.

There are designed times for water breaks and your professor will let you know.

No sparring during beginner classes is allowed, as you are not expected to know already how to safely move around, but do not worry so you will be starting your sparring session too!

AFTER CLASS

We finish class and we thank everyone in the session by lining up and shaking hands with everyone presents on the day, once the class is over you are free to leave the mat, go get changed and if you have rented or borrowed a kimono you can leave at the reception and the staff will provide all info about how to continue your BJJ journey. If you already own a BJJ kimono make sure you put it in the wash as soon as you get home.

We have showers in our facility and we advise you to take a shower after class right away.

Once you get home, drink plenty of water and have a healthy meal to speed your recovery, you might want to prepare ahead your meal so is ready when you get home.

If you have not booked your session yet, you can do so here.

We look forward to seeing you for your very first class.
